AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - With Thanksgiving looming, Maine’s wild turkeys are ready to give thanks for the end of the fall hunting season.
This year’s fall turkey hunt began on Oct. 1 and ends on Monday.
Maine hunters pursue turkeys with shotguns and bows and arrows. The rules differ by wildlife management district.
Hunters are allowed to take one wild turkey in districts mostly located in the central part of the state. The limit is two turkeys in southern and coastal districts. The hunt is closed in far northern Maine.
Wild turkeys are edible game birds. The meat tends to be leaner and darker than the more familiar domestic turkeys that find their way to most dinner tables on Thanksgiving.
There is also a spring turkey hunt that takes place in May and June.
