WESTHAMPTON BEACH, N.Y. (AP) - State officials say work has begun to connect homes with wells threatened by contamination from Long Island’s Gabreski Air National Guard Base to the municipal water system.
The Department of Environmental Conservation said Saturday the cost will be covered by state and federal governments.
Fifty-seven Westhampton Beach homes with wells threatened with PFOS will join the municipal system. PFOS is a component of firefighting foam that has been linked to cancer and other illnesses.
Under a separate agreement, the U.S. Department of Defense will cover the cost of connecting nine additional homes with well contamination that meets or exceeds federal health advisory levels for the chemical.
The work is expected to be completed in December.
Gabreski Air National Guard Base was designated a state Superfund site in September.
