The U.S. Army says the Hawaii-based soldier who died during a training exercise was a combat engineer from Mississippi.

The Army on Friday identified the 26-year-old solider as Sgt. Renardo Deshun Dukes of Pachuta, Mississippi.

He was killed Thursday in a training incident on Oahu. The Army hasn’t released details about his death. The Army is investigating.

The Army says Dukes was one of 4,000 soldiers participating in the Lightning Forge training exercise at various locations on the islands of Oahu and Hawaii.

Dukes was assigned to the 65th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in central Oahu.

The military had warned the public about the training, saying it would involve the use of “blank ammunition and explosive simulators.”

The U.S. Army says a soldier has died during training exercises on Oahu.

The soldier, who was based at Schofield Barracks, died Thursday in the Kahuku area. The soldier’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.

Officials have not released further details about the death. They say an investigation is ongoing.

The 25th Infantry Division has been conducting a “large-scale” training exercise called Lightning Forge, which began Oct. 28 and is expected to wrap up Sunday.

Army officials say it focused on the training of roughly 4,000 soldiers in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, but involved a total of about 10,000 Hawaii soldiers.

The military had warned neighboring communities about the training last week, saying it would involve the use of “blank ammunition and explosive simulators.”
