ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Gov. Larry Hogan has appointed a new member to the state Board of Education to fill the seat left vacant by S. James Gates Jr.

The Washington Post reports (https://wapo.st/2fA1XUR) that Rose M. Li, a Republican who lives in Bethesda, became an acting member of the board Nov. 1.

Li is president of Rose Li and Associates Inc., which provides project management support. She also unsuccessfully ran for the Maryland House of Delegates.

The permanent appointment must be approved by the state Senate during the 2017 legislative session.

Gates resigned last week to protest an order by Hogan to start schools after Labor Day. The physicist and professor said the order impinged on the authority of the state board, which is supposed to be independent.
