RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has proposed fining Dominion Virginia Power about $260,000 for two oil spills that fouled public waters in January.
The Washington Post (https://wapo.st/2eCU502 ) reports that the two spills consisted of a 13,500-gallon spill that polluted a waterfowl sanctuary and the Potomac River, as well as a 9,000-gallon spill in Staunton.
The environmental agency recommended earlier this week that Dominion pay a fine of about $259,500 and reimburse the state about $6,000 for its investigative costs related to the incidents.
DEQ spokesman Bill Hayden says the consent order is out for public comment for 30 days, and then it will likely end up at the State Water Control Board for action at its December meeting.
A Dominion spokesman said the company would comply with the order.
