CORNING, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a man who died in a crash on an upstate New York highway was fleeing police after getting caught stealing merchandise from a Southern Tier retail store.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office says 35-year-old Adam VanCise, of Palmyra, was caught leaving the Walmart in the town of Horseheads with a cart full of goods around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

He fled on foot to a nearby store, where he stole the car of a woman who had just gotten out of her vehicle. He then drove a few miles west into Steuben (stoo-BEHN’) County.

Police ended the pursuit when it became too dangerous. Moments later they came upon the car after it had crashed into another vehicle in Corning.

VanCise was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people in the other vehicle suffered non-life threatening injuries.
