Years after relegating her childhood team to No. 2 status behind the New York Yankees, Hillary Clinton is back on the Chicago Cubs’ bandwagon after the team captured its first World Series championship in 108 years.
Mrs. Clinton transformed into a Yankees fan after moving to New York in 2000 and later complained that she’d become sick of the Cubs “losing every single year.” Chicago defeated the Cleveland Indians in Game 7 of the World Series Wednesday night, snapping the longest championship drought in Major League Baseball and in the process recapturing Mrs. Clinton as a fan.
“I’ve been a fan all my life,” the former secretary state said of the Cubs during a campaign stop in North Carolina Thursday. “Started watching baseball with my dad, went to Wrigley Field. It’s been a long time, 108 years, to win a championship and make history — Last night was very special on lots of fronts, and who knows, maybe we’ll see even more history made in a few days.”
While it’s well documented that Mrs. Clinton was a Cubs fan for decades, the team was demoted after the Clintons left the White House. As a senator for New York, Mrs. Clinton proudly proclaimed herself a Yankees fan.
In a 2014 interview with the Chicago Tribune, the former secretary of state explained that she ditched the Cubs because she couldn’t tolerate all the losing.
“Once a Cubs fan, always a Cubs fan, but my personality was such that I couldn’t stay hitched only to a losing team,” she said. “I had to search for a team that would counterbalance the experience of losing every single year, so — I hate to say this, and I know you’ll boo me — I became a Yankees fan. I alternated my affections because it was just too hard being a Cubs fan, only being a Cubs fan.”
