PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - A court will likely have to decide who gets a $1 million settlement from a Virginia city over the death of teen shot by police.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/2ezHU3W) that the victim is survived by his parents and eight half-siblings. So far, there is no agreement over how much each person should receive. And an attorney for the estate of 18-year-old William Chapman II said the “court will probably have to make a determination” over how the money is divided.
Chapman was shot outside a Wal-Mart in Portsmouth last year by former police officer Stephen Rankin. Chapman was black and Rankin is white. The officer lost his job and was convicted in August of voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison.
