CHICAGO (AP) - The recent death of a Chicago man who was savagely beaten by his father 68 years ago has been ruled as a homicide.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office determined Wednesday that the death of Arthur Malone, 74, was due to an incident in 1948 in which his father beat him and his two older brothers with a hammer before killing himself, the Chicago Tribune (https://trib.in/2fgVieH ) reported.
Malone died in his South Side home in August. He and his brothers, Norman and Irving Malone, struggled their entire lives with severe head injuries they sustained. According to police, the case is considered closed.
On the night of the attack their father, Quintis George Malone, had given his wife ice cream that he and a neighbor friend had spiked with a drug to render her unconscious before attacking the children in their sleep.
Norman Malone said that his mother screamed and ran out of the house after she discovered he and Irving brutally attacked. After attacking the youngest brother, Arthur, the boys’ father fled to nearby railroad tracks where he “threw himself in the path of a passenger train,” according to the Chicago Defender.
“According to my mother, what I could get out of her was that he had advanced stages of syphilis, and he knew that he was going to die,” said Norman Malone. “And so, rather than burden my mother of raising three boys, he decided he was going to take us with him.”
