SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - A University of Rhode Island medieval history professor is being honored by the government of France for her research into French history.

The university said Tuesday that Joelle Rollo-Koster will be named a Chevalier (shuh-VAL’-ee-ay) of the Ordre des Palmes Academiques (ahk-uh-dem-EEK’) at an on-campus ceremony next week. The academic award was created by Napoleon in 1808.

Rollo-Koster’s area of expertise is the social and cultural life in Europe from the 1300s to the 1420s, including death, politics, marriage, religious views and day-to-day life. She is recognized worldwide for her scholarship on the city of Avignon and its papacy. She has authored several books.

Rollo-Koster is a native of Toulon, France, who joined the URI faculty as an assistant professor in 1996.

She says she’s delighted by the honor.
