CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Valley Authority has been fined $140,000 for fire violations at a nuclear power plant near Athens, Alabama.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported Tuesday (https://bit.ly/2gFDhav ) that Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials issued the civil penalty to TVA after an investigation found that five contract workers deliberately didn’t perform required fire watches last year at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Station.

NRC Regional Administrator Cathy Haney says the watches are an integral part of the plant’s overall fire protection strategy, especially when other equipment is temporarily unavailable, which was the case at the time.

Browns Ferry site director Steve Bono says TVA “accepts full responsibility” for the violations.

Bono says the workers involved in the incident were dismissed and that TVA has implemented corrective actions to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
