RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Richmond police are investigating after someone vandalized the Christopher Columbus statue in Byrd Park.
Richmond police spokesman James Mercante tells local media that on Thanksgiving day, officers arrived at the park to find red paint covering the front of the statue and its base.
Mercante says detectives are taking the vandalism very seriously, and that any damage values at $1,000 or more can result in a felony charge.
Less than three weeks earlier, multiple Richmond Civil War and Confederate monuments were vandalized with spray paint.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Richmond police.
