Prince and David Bowie, two rock-music legends who died this year, are among the 25 musicians to be honored Monday by the recording industry. Their respective hit songs “Sign ’O’ The Times” and “Changes” were named among the 2017 class inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Other awardees in the diverse collection include “Straight Outta Compton” by N.W.A. and “Maggie May” by Rod Stewart.
“Memorable and inspiring, these recordings are proudly added to our growing catalog and are an integral part of our musical, social and cultural history,” said Neil Portnow, the president and CEO of The Recording Academy, the parent organization of the annual Grammy Awards.
Inducted selections must be either a single or album recording that is “at least 25 years old [and] that exhibit[s] qualitative or historical significance,” according to the official statement released by The Recording Academy.
“Each year recordings are reviewed by a special member committee comprised of eminent and knowledgeable professionals from all branches of the recording arts, with final approval by The Recording Academy’s National Board of Trustees,” the statement added. “The Hall, now in its 44th year, currently totals 1,038 recordings.”
Music fans can enjoy all but one of the 2017 Grammy Hall of Fame selections on a Spotify playlist available free online here. Prince’s music, with the exception of his 2015 single “Stare,” is not available on the music-streaming service.
The 2017 Grammy Awards will air live on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. (ET).
