TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida’s prison agency is set to pay $800,000 to settle lawsuits alleging that the state retaliated against whistleblowers.
The Miami Herald (https://hrld.us/2gDJgyV) reports that the agreement filed Tuesday in Leon County Circuit Court exonerates three investigators who worked in the inspector general’s office of the Department of Corrections.
Doug Glisson, Aubrey Land and John Ulm had come forward with evidence that they believed an inmate at Franklin Correctional Institution, Randall Jordan-Aparo, had been gassed to death by prison guards. The three employees contended that the agency inspector general tried to discredit them after they started asking questions.
Under the settlement the three employees will each be paid $133,333 and three pending internal investigations will be dropped. Three other employees will also be paid $50,000. The attorneys who handled the case will be paid $250,001.
