BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey has released a report finding that less than half the money raised by professional solicitors in 2015 ended up in the hands of charities.
Healey, a Democrat, says charities sometimes pay professional solicitors to raise money. Solicitors are required to register with the state.
In 2015, solicitors collected more than $200 million. Of that, charities received just $82 million.
Healey says on average, 41 cents of every dollar a conventional professional solicitor collected was directed to a charity.
Healey said Tuesday that the 2015 reports are similar to reports from the last five years in which net proceeds of funds transferred to charities from professional solicitors fell below 50 percent.
In 2014, about 38 cents of every dollar went to charities.
