A Louisville police detective struck and killed in a crash allegedly caused by a drunken driver is being remembered as a “gentle and kind protector.”

Hundreds of people gathered at a Catholic church for Jason Schweitzer’s funeral on Wednesday in Louisville. Mourners included Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and many of Schweitzer’s colleagues on the Louisville Metro Police Department.

The Rev. Dick Sullivan called Schweitzer a “gentle and kind protector” who “did so much good.”

In a eulogy written by Schweitzer’s father but read by a family friend, mourners were encouraged to raise a toast later to Schweitzer. But they were urged not to toast with alcohol.

Schweitzer and another man were struck and killed early Saturday in Lexington.
