Susan Sarandon officially endorsed Green Party candidate Jill Stein for president, saying her fear of Donald Trump wasn’t enough for her to consider a vote for Hillary Clinton.
The 70-year-old actress, who was an active supporter of Vermont Sen. Bernard Sanders’ failed presidential campaign, wrote a letter posted Tuesday on Ms. Stein’s campaign website.
“I’ve been waiting for any indication that Hillary Clinton’s position on the issues that are most urgent to me, has changed,” Ms. Sarandon wrote. “But …

- She shows no support for legalizing marijuana.
- She supports TPP.
- She has sold fracking and Monsanto.
- She supports offshore drilling.
- She has no position on the Dakota Access Pipeline.
- She opposes the labeling of GMOs.
- She opposes the breakup of big banks.
- She takes lobbyists’ money for campaigning.
- She opposes a binding climate treaty.
- She supports unconditional military aid to Israel.”
Ms. Sarandon said she was therefore endorsing Ms. Stein for supporting the issues she believes are the most important.
“Fear of Donald Trump is not enough for me to support Clinton, with her record of corruption,” Ms. Sarandon wrote. “Now that Trump is self-destructing, I feel even those in swing states have the opportunity to vote their conscience.
“It’s clear a third party is necessary and viable at this time,” she wrote. “And this is the first step in accomplishing this end.”
Ms. Stein’s campaign said Ms. Sarandon’s endorsement “made our day.”
The “Mothers and Daughters” star has been outspoken in her opposition of Mrs. Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee. In June, she said Mrs. Clinton had done “horrible things” as secretary of state and was far “more dangerous” than Mr. Trump. She also predicted Mrs. Clinton would be indicted by the Department of Justice for her private email server.
