House Speaker Paul D. Ryan on Wednesday said Republicans are going to need to control both the White House and Congress if they have designs on getting Obamacare repealed and replaced and urged GOP voters to get to the polls ahead of Election Day.
“A unified Republican government — and really only a unified Republican government — can get you a replacement for Obamacare,” Mr. Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, said on radio host Hugh Hewitt’s show.
“We put a repeal bill of Obamacare on President Obama’s desk,” he said. “Clearly, he vetoed it, but what we demonstrated [was] that with just the simple majorities we have in the House and Senate, we can put these things on his desk.”
“Imagine if we had a Republican president. This is what Donald Trump’s talking about,” he said. “This is not just a vague promise — this is clearly an action plan that we have.”
Mr. Ryan said the media likes to play up internal GOP differences “far more than they are.”
“Look at better.gop — it’s an agenda. Our nominee, Donald, is extremely familiar with it,” he said. “We’re all on the same page on these things.”
Mr. Ryan said he already voted early for Mr. Trump, along with other Republicans on the ballot, such as Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin.
“I’m going to spend the last four days of this campaign with my senator, Ron Johnson, criss-crossing Wisconsin explaining to my fellow citizens in my state, a battleground state, unified Republican government can get you all of these things,” Mr. Ryan said.
“So Republicans need to come home. Republicans need to vote. Turnout is the key, and that is why we’re out there,” he said.
Mr. Johnson and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker joined Mr. Trump at a rally in Eau Claire Tuesday, while Mr. Ryan said earlier in the day that he had prior commitments to campaign elsewhere.
