ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) - A Southern California airport has been restored to local control after 20 years of ownership by neighboring Los Angeles.
LA Mayor Eric Garcetti and others were on hand Wednesday for a ceremony marking the transfer of Ontario International Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration approved an operating certificate for the new airport authority on Tuesday.
The airport came under Los Angeles management in 1967 and ownership in 1985.
But a lawsuit filed three years ago claimed the Los Angeles World Airports agency reneged on upgrade promises and intentionally neglected the struggling airfield.
Under a settlement reached last year, Ontario will pay LA World Airports $120 million over 10 years. The Ontario International Airport Authority also paid off $55.5 million in bonds issued by Los Angeles for airport improvements.
