More than 290,000 acres of working forest in Aroostook, Piscataquis and Penobscot counties has changed hands, and will remain working forest.

Forestry consultant Gary Bahlkow says the land was sold by Canopy Timberlands LLC to Tall Timbers Trust. The deal closed on Sept. 30. The sale price was not disclosed.

Such land transfers are fairly routine.

Timber companies own vast tracts of northern Maine wilderness that’s managed for logs for paper mills or other wood products. Part of the land that Tall Timbers Trust purchased was once part of the holdings of the now-defunct Great Northern Paper.
