Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump in the critical battleground state of Pennsylvania, while Mr. Trump leads in Ohio and the two candidates are locked in close contests in Florida and North Carolina, according to Quinnipiac University polling released Thursday.
Mrs. Clinton led Mr. Trump by 5 points in Pennsylvania, while Mr. Trump led by 5 in Ohio, according to the polling. Mrs. Clinton had a 3-point lead in North Carolina and a 1-point lead in Florida, though both those leads were inside the margin of error.
Last month, Mrs. Clinton had led Mr. Trump by 6 points in Pennsylvania and by 4 points in both Florida and North Carolina. The two candidates had been tied in Ohio.
“All four of these key states remain close entering the final days,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
“Florida, which has the largest cache of electoral votes, is a virtual tie and North Carolina is almost as close,” he said.
The margins were comparable when third party candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein were removed from the equation.
Mr. Trump still led among independents in Florida and North Carolina, as well as in Ohio, where his margin over Mrs. Clinton was 18 points.
“The Buckeye state is full of those who feel they have lost their jobs because of unfair trade treaties, and non-college educated whites,” Mr. Brown said.
The surveys were conducted from Oct. 27-Nov. 1. On Oct. 28, FBI Director James B. Comey informed Congress that the bureau learned of the existence of emails that appear to be relevant to its probe into Mrs. Clinton’s private email setup — a disclosure that has dominated coverage of the presidential race in recent days.
