With about a week to go until Election Day, Libertarian Party vice presidential nominee Bill Weld said he’s “vouching for” Hillary Clinton amid a renewed FBI probe and that he fears for the country if Donald Trump is elected.
“I’m here vouching for Mrs. Clinton, and I think it’s high time somebody did,” Mr. Weld said on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” Tuesday.
“And I’m doing it based on my personal experience with her,” he said. “I think she deserves to have people vouch for her other than members of the Democratic National Committee, so I’m here to do that.”
“I fear for the country if Mr. Trump should be elected,” Mr. Weld said. “I think it’s a candidacy without any parallel that I can recall.”
FBI Director James B. Comey recently announced that the bureau learned of the existence of emails that appear to be relevant to the investigation into Mrs. Clinton’s private email set-up.
“I think it’s a distraction and we should just ignore it, because there’s nothing there, and get on with the business of the last week of the election,” Mr. Weld said.
Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson said recently that it’s Mr. Weld’s call as to what he wants to say about the two major-party candidates.
“I’ll do the Hillary thing; he can do the Trump thing,” Mr. Johnson said.
Mr. Johnson has lost ground in some recent polling and is at about 5 percent in the latest Real Clear Politics average. But Mr. Johnson, Green Party candidate Jill Stein, and independent conservative candidate Evan McMullin could potentially still tip the scales in key states if the margins between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Trump are very close.
