VANCLEAVE, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi authorities say a man holding a handgun was shot and wounded by sheriff’s deputies.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell says deputies were called Monday night in Vancleave and found 47-year-old William Thompson holding a handgun.

Ezell said deputies had been to the home several times last week and Thompson had threatened them.

He says deputies tried to calm Thompson down and ordered him to drop the weapon. The sheriff said Thompson was shot when he refused to drop it.

Thompson was taken to a hospital in Ocean Springs, where he is in intensive care. His condition was not immediately known.

Ezell said the two deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay. He said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.
