BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont woman has pleaded guilty to a child cruelty charge after police say she took heroin and passed out in a car with her 5-year-old son in the backseat.

The Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/2euPr3U ) reports that 38-year-old Hannah Smith, of Franklin, entered the plea Monday in Burlington. She was sentenced to spend 18 months under the supervision of the Rapid Intervention Community Court while she undergoes drug treatment elsewhere.

Police say the son of Smith and her partner, Adam Legrand, screamed for help after the couple used heroin and began to lose consciousness in July. Court documents say passers-by found the parents in a semi-conscious state.

The adults were hospitalized and given an opiate overdose reversal drug.

Legrand has pleaded not guilty to a child cruelty charge.
