OPINION:
The mainstream media has turned a story — about Hillary Clinton being under federal criminal investigation by the FBI — into an indictment on FBI Director James B. Comey.
Tuesday’s headline of USA Today reads: “Email case puts heat on FBI chief.”
Sorry, USA Today, that’s not how it works. The heat is on Mrs. Clinton — the Democratic presidential nominee and the target of the investigation — not the law enforcement agency that’s doing the investigation.
Since Friday, when the news of the reopened case broke, the coverage on the three broadcast networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS has been mostly focused on Mr. Comey coming under criticism than on Mrs. Clinton herself.
According to a study by the conservative Media Research Center, from Oct. 28-31, the morning and evening news programs had 88 statements critical of Mr. Comey, compared to 31 negative statements regarding Mrs. Clinton — essentially turning a Clinton scandal into a Comey scandal.
There is no precedent for a major party nominating somebody under a criminal investigation. That’s the story folks — it all boils down to decisions Mrs. Clinton has made — and has tried to cover up and slow walk — that leads us to the point where we are today.
As conservative columnist Rich Lowry wrote in the New York Post on Monday, the “only reason Comey figures in the election is that Democrats knowingly nominated someone under FBI investigation.”
Indeed.
