NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has chosen author and historian Walter Isaacson to serve on the city’s Planning Commission.

Landrieu made the announcement in a Tuesday news release. Pending approval by the New Orleans City Council, Isaacson will serve from Jan. 1 until June 30, 2023.

The nine-member commission’s duties include reviews and recommendations regarding zoning ordinances, city map changes and changes to the city’s master plan - a guide for future development in the city.

Landrieu said Isaacson will be “an invaluable resource” as the city updates the master plan.

Isaacson, a Louisiana native, is a former editor of Time magazine and a former CEO of CNN. He became president of the nonpartisan Aspen Institute - a policy think tank - in 2003.
