Braden Holtby’s record-setting year caught the attention of his peers as well.
The Washington Capitals goaltender was named a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award on Friday, joining Chicago Blackhawks right wing Patrick Kane and Dallas Stars left wing Jamie Benn on the short list for an honor given by other players to the NHL’s most outstanding player.
Holtby, already a finalist for the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender, tied a single-season record with his 48th victory in the Capitals’ win over the St. Louis Blues on April 9. He had a 2.20 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage, marks that each ranked in the top eight, and had a 22-game point streak that lasted from Nov. 12 to Jan. 14.
The only other Capitals player to win the award is teammate Alex Ovechkin, who claimed it in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and was a finalist in 2006, 2013 and last season. It, along with the Vezina Trophy, will be presented at the NHL’s awards show in Las Vegas on June 22.
