The Rolling Stones are reminding Donald Trump that you can’t always get what you want.
In a statement Wednesday, the legendary rock band said it had not given Mr. Trump permission to play their songs at his rallies.
The Stones “have requested that they cease all use immediately,” the statement said.
During a campaign event Tuesday night, Mr. Trump played the Stones’ 1981 rock smash “Start Me Up” and among the other songs he frequently plays is their operatic 1969 classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”
Political campaigns don’t need an artist’s specific permission to play hit songs at rallies, provided they have a license with the recording guilds, which provides access to all the music under the guild’s purview.
However, the Trump campaign has in the past stopped playing hits by Adele, Aerosmith and Neil Young when those artists got wind of Mr. Trump’s use and made public objections.
