Several Republican lawmakers reportedly walked out of a regular policy meeting when one of them opened it my reading a biblical condemnation of homosexuality.
According to a report in The Hill, citing anonymous Republican House members, Rep Rick Allen of Georgia also suggested some of his colleagues were opposing Christianity for backing discrimination protections for gays and the transgendered.
“It was f—-ing ridiculous,” one anonymous Republican lawmaker in the room told The Hill.
“A lot of members were clearly uncomfortable and upset,” an unnamed Republican leadership aide added.
The Hill did not specify what the Bible verse was.
The walkout happened in the context of Democrats using several spending bills to force votes on discrimination protections that many Republicans would rather avoid.
Mr. Allen’s office had no immediate reply to The Hill.
