Washington Wizards forward Markieff Morris was detained at Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday because of suspected marijuana in checked luggage associated with his traveling party, according to law enforcement.
Morris was a part of six travelers that included himself, his mother and four other friends. A total of six bags were checked. One of the checked bags contained what appeared to be marijuana, according to law enforcement. The amount would fall under the category of “personal use.”
Once it was determined who checked the baggage, Morris was brought to the Tinicum Township Police precinct for questioning, according to law enforcement. Morris was said to be cooperative.
Police are trying to determine who the contents of the bag belonged to.
The Tinicum Township Police Department in Delaware County oversees Terminal A at the Philadelphia International Airport. The initial bag search led to the police being contacted, then Morris meeting with them.
Morris was released pending a further investigation, a police spokesperson said. The Delaware County District Attorney will determine charges, if any.
In a statement, the Wizards said they spoke with Morris earlier today and “will continue to gather more details about the situation,” but will have no further comment at this time.
Morris, 26, was acquired in a midseason trade with the Phoenix Suns for a 2016 first-round draft pick, which turned out to be No. 13 overall, Kris Humphries and DeJuan Blair. He averaged 12.4 points per game in 26.4 minutes per game on the floor. He is projected as the Wizards starting power forward next season.
