Donning cowboy hats and strumming acoustic guitars, “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon and comedian Adam Sandler welcomed U.S. servicemen to New York City for the annual Fleet Week on Wednesday night with a musical tribute based on a 1990s country music hit.
“Well, I’ll tell you the truth, I love all the troops, protectin’ the land, sea and air,” Mr. Fallon opened the song, “Friends On All Bases,” a parody of Garth Brooks’s “Friends In Low Places.”
“Now you’re back in town, keepin’ us safe and sound, from that crazy-ass Elmo in Times Square,” Mr. Sandler crooned.
“Now I ain’t gonna lie, I love seein’ you guys in my audience every day,” Mr. Fallon sang, setting up another punchline by “Saturday Night Live” alumnus Sandler, who quipped, “And when the show’s through, just one thing left to do: go out to the bars and get laid!”
Each service branch was then given a shout out in the song’s chorus, as a camera panned the audience comprised of cheering soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen.
The official website for New York City’s Fleet Week celebrations described the annual event as “an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services.”
New York City’s Fleet Week kicked off on Wednesday, with the final full day of festivities occurring on Memorial Day. Ships will leave harbor at some time to be determined on Tuesday, May 31.
