Sen. Charles E. Schumer’s regional spokesman in Upstate New York was arrested this week and charged with possession of pills and anabolic steroids, according to police.
Cody Peluso, 32, a longtime employee of Mr. Schumer, was arrested after the drugs and steroids were found during a traffic stop Monday in Stony Point, N.Y.
Police found 200 anabolic steroids, one pill of the antidepressant alprazolam and two pills of soboxone, a drug used to treat opioid withdrawal symptoms.
“We are shocked and saddened by this news. Mr. Peluso will immediately be placed on leave pending a complete investigation of this incident,” said Schumer spokesman Matt House.
Mr. Schumer is poised to become the next Senate Democratic leader.
He currently serves as the vice chairman of the Senate Democratic Conference and chairman of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee that crafts the conference’s messaging.
Mr. Peluso was stopped after a license plate reader determined his vehicle registration was suspended. Police then determined Mr. Peluso was driving on a revoked license, according a report in the Putnam (New York) Daily Voice.
