Won’t you be their neighbor?
It won’t be official unless Barack and Michelle Obama sign on the dotted lines, of course, but the National Journal is reporting that the haute Sheridan-Kalorama neighborhood north of Dupont Circle and adjacent to Rock Creek Park will be the Obamas’ new house.
Home to former presidents and Supreme Court justices and within walking distance of the British ambassador’s residence and other dignitaries, Kalorama has long appealed to the America’s gentry, a sophisticated lot who appreciate the prime view of Washington.
President Obama announced this winter that the family would be staying put, just not in the White House for obvious reasons. Oldest daughter Malia Obama graduates from the exclusive Sidwell Friends School in June, turns 18 on July 4 and then takes a year off before heading off to Harvard. Younger daughter Sasha, who turns 15 in June, is a Sidwell freshman, which means Republicans will have at least two additional years to kick Mr. Obama inside the Beltway.
“Transferring someone in the middle of high school — tough,” the president said earlier this year.
Tougher still could be trying to hide and maneuver Secret Service SUVs thru the narrow, tight streets of Kalorama. Such a need simply never crossed Pierre L’Enfant’s mind.
