Democratic presidential hopeful Bernard Sanders on Sunday endorsed the primary opponent of Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who also represents Florida’s 23rd Congressional District.
Mr. Sanders said the views of Tim Canova, a Florida lawyer who has challenged the chairwoman for her House seat in an Aug. 30 primary, are much more aligned with his than those of Ms. Wasserman Schultz.
“Well, clearly I favor her opponent,” Mr. Sanders said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “His views are much closer to mine than as to Wasserman Schultz’s.”
The Vermont senator also said that Ms. Wasserman Schultz will not be retained as DNC chair if he is elected.
“And let me also say this, in all due respect to the current chairperson, if elected president, she would not be reappointed to chair of the DNC,” he said.
Mr. Sanders has accused Ms. Wasserman Schultz and the DNC of favoring Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary race.
Mr. Canova, who has publicly backed Mr. Sanders, has raised more than $1 million for his primary challenge.
