LOUISVILLE — Likely Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has consistently derided Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton as “Crooked Hillary,” briefly tested out “Heartless Hillary” as a possible new nickname for Mrs. Clinton on Friday before saying he likes the “Crooked” moniker better.

“Hillary wants to disarm vulnerable Americans in high-crime neighborhoods,” Mr. Trump said at the NRA-ILA Leadership Forum at the National Rifle Association’s annual meetings. “Whether it’s a young single mom in Florida or a grandmother in Ohio, Hillary wants them to be defenseless — wants to take away any chance they have of survival.

“And by the way, you have men and you have women sitting in an apartment, and outside is tremendous crime, tremendous crime of all [kinds], and they need to be protected,” he said. “And you know the only way they’re going to be able to protect themselves, and if you take that gun away from them, it’s going to be [a] very unfair situation.

“And that’s why we’re going to call her ’Heartless Hillary,’” he said. “Somehow I like ’Crooked Hillary’ better.”

Before Mr. Trump spoke, the NRA officially endorsed him for president.
