Donald Trump broke out to a 5-point lead over Hillary Clinton in a new poll Thursday, making the presumptive GOP nominee’s biggest lead yet in the survey.
Mr. Trump topped Mrs. Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee, 42 percent to 37 percent, a Rasmussen Reports survey said.
The poll had a 3-point margin of error.
The pollsters also found that 13 percent prefer neither candidate, and 7 percent remain undecided.
The same survey released at the beginning of the month showed Mr. Trump with a thin lead of 41 percent to 39 percent. The pollsters called it “statistically insignificant.”
In the last poll, 15 percent favored someone other than Mr. Trump or Mrs. Clinton and 5 percent were undecided. Both those measures increased in the new poll.
This time, both candidates demonstrated crossover appeal.
Mr. Trump now gets 76 percent of the Republican vote, while Mrs. Clinton garners 72 percent Democratic support. About 13 percent of Democrats prefer Mr. Trump, and 9 percent of GOP voters favor Mrs. Clinton.
Among voters not affiliated with either major party, Mr. Trump leads 41 percent to 28 percent, but 31 percent of these voters either like another candidate or are undecided.
