Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump bested likely Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in a hypothetical general election matchup, said a new poll that also revealed a majority of voters have negative views of both candidates.
Mr. Trump topped Mrs. Clinton 45 percent to 42 percent in the Fox News poll released Wednesday.
His lead was within the poll’s margin of error.
Mr. Trump led among white men, 55 percent to 33 percent, while Mrs. Clinton was the favorite of women voters, 50 percent to 36 percent.
The same poll showed Mrs. Clinton leading in a theoretical matchup last month 48 percent to 41 percent, before Mr. Trump locked up the GOP nomination.
Voters have reservations about both candidates’ honesty and moral values, according to the survey.
Mrs. Clinton had a negative 35-point honesty rating, with 31 percent saying she is honest and 66 percent saying she is not honest.
Mr. Trump did slightly better on that measure, with 40 percent calling him honest and 57 percent saying the opposite.
Mrs. Clinton has regularly taken the lead in matchups against Mr. Trump, although the contest has grown increasingly tighter over time. Mr. Trump also topped Mrs. Clinton by 2 points last month in a Rasmussen Reports survey.
