Phil Robertson, the “Duck Dynasty” patriarch, said Wednesday he’s now backing presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump and imagined a scenario where Mr. Trump wins and the camera pans to Mr. Robertson as the businessman’s “spiritual adviser.”
“I was forced into the ’Trump Train’ but I am happily volunteering my services for Mr. Trump,” Mr. Robertson, who had backed Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2016 GOP race, said on “Fox and Friends.”
“Mainly because the Republican party has spoken,” he said. “The people have said, ’we want Mr. Trump.’ So Mr. Cruz goes down — I love him. But now I’m on the ’Trump Train,’ and I’ll do everything I can to help him.
“Hey, we have to be loyal to the party,” he said. “I know Clinton’s record, or Bernie Sanders’ — I know their record. With Donald, I’m not quite sure since he doesn’t have a record in the political arena.”
“However, I’m taking my chances not even knowing,” he said. “I know the Clintons. I’m not sure about Trump. I’m with Trump.”
“I’ll make a valiant attempt behind the scenes, you understand, to sit down with Donald with [a] Bible in between us,” he said.
Mr. Robertson said he might be able to help Mr. Trump “with concepts like loving your enemies, loving your God, loving your neighbor. Even your enemies — forgive them and move on.”
“I can see it now: Trump wins, and the camera’s panning and his spiritual adviser is me,” he said. “Is America ready for it?”
