Comments by former Democrat Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania exploded on social media Wednesday when he discussed Donald Trump’s electoral chances with “ugly women.”
“Will he have some appeal to working-class Dems in Levittown or Bristol? Sure,” Mr. Rendell told The Washington Post. “For every one he’ll lose, one-and-a-half, two Republican women. Trump’s comments like, ’You can’t be a 10 if you’re flat-chested,’ that’ll come back to haunt him. There are probably more ugly women in America than attractive women. People take that stuff personally.”
The former governor’s name started trending on Twitter after the story was published.
Mother Jones called Mr. Rendell’s comments “the worst theory” on why Hillary Clinton will be the next commander in chief.
“People who complain that I never tweet anything bad about Democrats: Here’s a huge fathead!” Mark Harris of Vulture magazine tweeted.
“Can we all agree that Ed Rendell should never open his mouth again ever please?” Ian Millhiser of Think Progress added.
The Washington Examiner also weighed in on Mr. Rendell’s comments, saying that if Mr. Trump made the “ugly women” comment then it would be dominate the news cycle.
“Everything Trump says about women has been jumped on by the media as proof of his misogyny. But when a Democrat says something like this? Radio silence,” the newspaper’s Ashe Schow said.
