Sen. Ted Cruz is trying to use former House Speaker John A. Boehner’s recent potshots at him to raise money for his 2018 re-election campaign.
“Remember when he called me ’Lucifer in the flesh?’” Mr. Cruz wrote in an email to supporters Friday. “Well, he didn’t think that was far enough. Now the ringleader of the Washington Cartel is celebrating our defeat by saying, ’thank God that guy from Texas didn’t win.’”
The “thank God” quote came from Mr. Boehner at a conference in Las Vegas on Thursday as he was talking about the 2016 GOP race.
Mr. Boehner had also recently referred to Mr. Cruz as “Lucifer in the flesh.”
“I got criticized by some satanic organization of Washington for giving Lucifer a bad name,” the former speaker said Thursday for good measure.
“This is just another sign that the establishment in Washington has learned nothing over the past year. The truth of the matter is they won’t stop attacking me, because they know I won’t stop fighting for you,” Mr. Cruz wrote Friday.
“I can’t take them on alone. Will you make an immediate contribution of $5, $10, $35, $50 or whatever you can afford at this time?” he wrote.
Mr. Cruz was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012. He said on Wednesday that he filed to run for re-election in 2018, after announcing last week he was suspending his 2016 presidential campaign.
