Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Wednesday cited tradition as part of the reasoning behind his plans not to unveil his vice presidential pick until the GOP convention.
“I just think I want to hold it. I don’t have a choice yet,” Mr. Trump said on “Fox and Friends.” “I have five or six people that I think would be very good.”
Asked why he doesn’t plan to announce his choice until the convention, Mr. Trump said: “Because I think that’s traditionally the way it’s done, and I like tradition, and I think suspense is a good thing.”
“Honestly, right now, I’m vetting various people, and I’ll make a determination sometime before the convention, probably announce it during the convention,” he said.
Mr. Trump didn’t name specific people, but said those who are taking themselves out of the running weren’t being considered in the first place. Sen. Marco Rubio said in a Facebook post on Monday that he does not want to be considered.
“I do get a kick out of all of these people say they’ve decided they don’t want to do it,” Mr. Trump said. “They weren’t on the list, you know — none of ’em. Everybody that talks about being vice president, they’ve decided not to do it — they weren’t on the list. But that’s OK.”
“You know, what difference does it make? Let ’em have fun. They’re politicians. Let ’em have a good time,” he said.
