North Korea continued its string of belligerent actions Thursday, firing two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, east of the Korean Peninsula.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, the Southern military’s Joint Chief of Staff said it was “keeping close tabs on the situation and is prepared to deal with any North Korean provocations.”

Yonhap reported that the missiles were fired from Hwanghae Province, south of the capital Pyongyang, and flew about 300 miles before dropping into the East Sea, northeast of the South Korean port city of Wonsan.

For several days in a row, North Korea has responded to joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises and United Nations sanctions with some form of saber-rattling, such as threatening a pre-emptive nuclear strike on the U.S. and saying it had successfully developed the means to build nuclear warheads.

The ballistic missiles fired Thursday are of a kind that the established nuclear powers such as the U.S., Russia and France have long equipped with that kind of warhead.
