The campaign of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that Sen. Bernard Sanders’ upset win in the Democratic presidential primary in Michigan was “not unexpected.”

“We knew going into Michigan that it was going to be a lot closer than the public polls showed, so this wasn’t unexpected for us,” Clinton campaign spokeswoman Kristina Schake said on CNN’s “New Day.”

The last RealClearPolitics average of public polling on the race had Mrs. Clinton ahead by about 21 points.

“But I will say it was a hard-fought race, and it was a must-win for Senator Sanders,” Ms. Schake said. “His campaign said that repeatedly. So they outspent us there, they worked really hard to win; we congratulate him on that win. But we feel confident going into next week, and Hillary’s going to do what Hillary does, which is get out there and do the hard work and try to earn every vote.”
