Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania said Thursday that the Republican party and conservatives are divided on the issue of immigration, and that every law passed in the country should be done with the best interests of America in mind.
Mr. Santorum, a former 2016 GOP presidential candidate, said beyond economic and moral issues, immigration is important as well.
“Because it’s one that says we are going to put the interests of profits, of having lower wages, if you’re a Republican, and you come at this from a business perspective,” he said at the 2016 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). “Or more votes, if you come at it from a Democratic perspective.”
“The Republican party and the conservative movement is divided on immigration,” Mr. Santorum said. “How can we be divided? What is the purpose of every law we should pass in America? I’ll answer that question for you.”
“Is it in the best interest of …” he said, pointing to the audience. “America.”
“But that’s not what we talk about with regards to immigration,” Mr. Santorum said. “No one talks about [in] our party whether immigration is in the best interests of the American people, particularly those 70 percent of Americans who are really struggling right now.”
