Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has pulled to within 3 points of GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump nationally, according to a poll released Wednesday.
Mr. Trump was in the lead at 41 percent, followed by Mr. Cruz at 38 percent and Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 17 percent, according to the Fox News poll. The 3-point difference was within the survey’s margin of error for the sample.
In a poll taken in mid-February, Mr. Trump had been at 36 percent, Mr. Cruz was at 19 percent, and Mr. Kasich was at 8 percent. Several candidates have dropped out of the race since then.
Mr. Cruz beat Mr. Trump by 13 points, 48 percent to 35 percent, among “very” conservative voters, while Mr. Trump had a 4-point edge, 43 percent to 39 percent, among white evangelical Christians.
About six in 10 Republican primary voters said the nomination should go to the candidate with the most delegates, even if that candidate is short of a majority heading into the party’s July convention.
On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had a 13-point lead over Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont, 55 percent to 42 percent.
