Late-night talk show host Bill Maher on Friday said Americans need to start blaming the rise of Donald Trump on that last 40 years of the self-esteem movement and parents raising their children to believe they can be the best at anything.
“Stop trying to pin the rise of Donald Trump on easy targets like racism, xenophobia, and fetal alcohol syndrome and put the blame where it belongs: on the self esteem movement,” Mr. Maher said, Mediaite reported.
The “Real Time” host played a montage of clips of Mr. Trump exclaiming that he is the best at everything and knows the most about everything.
“He’s the white Kanye West!” Mr. Maher said.
“Nobody loves the bible more?” Mr. Maher asked, referring to one of the clips of Mr. Trump making the statement at a campaign rally. “Nice try Pope Francis. Unfortunately for you, you’re in the same world with Donald Trump. Unfortunately for all of us.”
Mr. Maher said that the only thing scarier than Mr. Trump believing he is the most powerful person in the world, “is that in eight months, he could be.”
He said that Mr. Trump’s attitude is on par with that of an entitled toddler, and said parents must do better to ensure the next generation doesn’t become a slew of more Donald Trumps.
“What Donald Trump really reminds me of is a spoiled five year old throwing a tantrum,” Mr. Maher said.
“Every time a parent takes the kids’ side over the teachers’ and asks a child where they want to go to dinner or doesn’t say ’be quiet when adults are talking,’ you are creating the Donald Trumps of tomorrow,” he said.
