The White House will announce its choice for the Supreme Court on Wednesday, Reuters news agency reported.
Citing “multiple sources,” Reuters said the choice to replace Justice Antonin Scalia will be either Sri Srinivasan or Merrick Garland.
The nomination is likely to be purely honorary though — Republicans in the Senate have said they won’t even hold hearings on any nominee. And even should the chamber’s leadership relent, getting the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster is even less likely.
Mr. Srinivasan and Mr. Garland both serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
Following the death of Scalia, the Supreme Court is split evenly with four conservative justices and four liberal justices.
