North Carolina Democrats broke for Hillary Clinton on Tuesday, continuing the former first lady’s domination of the South and putting more distance between herself and Sen. Bernard Sanders in the race for the party’s presidential nomination.

Networks called the North Carolina contest for Mrs. Clinton at 8:15 p.m. With about 27 percent of the vote in, Mrs. Clinton had 58 percent to Mr. Sanders’ 39 percent.

Polls had shown Mrs. Clinton leading Mr. Sanders by double digits heading into Tuesday’s contest, and the election result was never truly in doubt.

Riding strong support among minority voters, Mrs. Clinton has won every Southern state so far in this Democratic primary, often crushing Mr. Sanders by significant margins.

About 121 delegates were at stake in the North Carolina primary, and they will be awarded proportionally depending on each candidate’s percentage of the vote.
