The Washington Redskins have been fairly inactive since free agency began last Wednesday. They’ve added just one player from outside the organization, former San Diego Chargers defensive end Kendall Reyes, who signed a one-year deal on Friday.
Otherwise, the Redskins have been focused on retaining their own players. That trend continued on Monday when they re-signed cornerback Will Blackmon to a two-year deal, according to a person familiar with the situation. Terms of Blackmon’s contract were not immediately available.
Since last Wednesday, the Redskins retained quarterback Colt McCoy, inside linebacker Mason Foster, nose tackle Kedric Golston, strong safety Duke Ihenacho, punter Tress Way and tight end Logan Paulsen. Leading into the start of free agency, the Redskins used the franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins and brought back inside linebacker Will Compton and running back Chris Thompson — both exclusive rights free agents.
Blackmon revived his career when he signed with the Redskins on Sept. 15 after being unexpectedly cut by the Seattle Seahawks at the end of the preseason. He was added to provide veteran depth, but emerged as a key starter after injuries to cornerbacks DeAngelo Hall, who moved to safety upon his return, and Chris Culliver.
Entering his 10th season, Blackmon helps strengthen a secondary that still has questions. The team’s top corners are currently Culliver, Blackmon, Bashaud Breeland and Quinton Dunbar. Culliver is rehabbing from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee, though he hopes to be ready for the start of the season. Dunbar, who is entering his second season, proved he was capable of playing the position after converting from wide receiver in training camp.
Hall, who missed five games last year with a sprained right toe, will try to make a transition to safety in his 13th season. The Redskins cut veteran free safety Dashon Goldson to save $8 million, though he could return on a cheaper salary. Ihenacho is looking to bounce back after breaking his wrist in the season-opener in 2015 and rookie Kyshoen Jarrett is still recovering from a neck and shoulder injury.
