Late-night talk show host Bill Maher on Friday scolded supporters of both Democratic presidential candidates, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont, for fighting against each other, saying the attacks will prove counterproductive and will see GOP front-runner Donald Trump win the White House.
“There are real enemies out there. Have you seen a Republican debate?” Mr. Maher said, Raw Story reported. “This is gonna be the death of liberals: this nit-picky intramural attacking of friends for insufficient purity — compulsively cleaning up that corner of the room that’s already quite clean, while there are giant piles of [expletive] everywhere else.”
Mr. Maher, who has been an outspoken supporter of Mr. Sanders, criticized Sanders supporters who have pledged not to vote for the Democratic party if Mrs. Clinton wins the nomination, calling it the “Bernie or Bust” campaign. Those supporters say they will instead cast their votes for Green Party candidate Jill Stein.
“On their website, they say they’re revolting against the plutocracy,” Mr. Maher said. “No, actually you’ll be helping elect a plutocrat who’s revolting.”
He also criticized Sanders supporters who harasses Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren on social media after she declined to endorse a candidate in the primary race.
“Really? Elizabeth Warren is the enemy now? She’s helped more millennials than Adderall,” Mr. Maher joked.
He also blasted Clinton supporters, including her husband former President Bill Clinton, for accusing Mr. Sanders’ fans of online sexism, which he said is “pretty rich coming from a guy that’s been known to grab your [expletive] in person.”
Mr. Maher again criticized Black Lives Matter activists who have condemned Democratic candidates, saying they should be focusing their anger on the GOP.
“So while Bernie fans attack Hillary fans for not being liberal enough and Hillary fans attack Bernie fans for not being feminist enough, Black Lives Matter is attacking them both for not being black enough,” Mr. Maher said. “Even though they both have a 100 percent voter rating from the NAACP, as opposed to Trump who gets five stars from the KKK.”
